What would Jesus do? Jaeger do? (Just finished Attack on Titan… wow.) Joe Biden?

Alright y’all, story time:

On Friday, my mom came home from work to find our garage car door open and a man walking down the alley smoking a cigarette. She suspected that he was in the garage because it smelled like smoke. Whether or not he took something or was just scoping it out or what is unknown. She was supposed to leave that night to go to the mountains with the rest of my family, leaving me and my sister, Sophia, alone for the weekend. Sophia and I tossed around the scenario of a home invasion.

Sophia is on her school trap shooting team and my family is gun owning, so at first we were like, “ok if he came into the house we would shoot him.” Then, Sophia pointed out that if we were to take up arms that we should shoot him in the leg, Joe Biden-style (sorry to get political). That way, we wouldn’t kill him, just maim or seriously injure. (R.I.P. in peace Dobby.)

Of course, with all this talk of gun and killing and in our current social climate we then asked ourselves, should we really be shooting him at all? This man probably doesn’t have a gun, right? So, why should we bring a gun to a proverbial knife fight? However, he has chosen to break into our home. However however, it would just be hypothetical stealing and, hypothetically no one said anything about him getting violent. But if, hypothetically, he did get violent, we could call it self-defense, right? However however however, we are two women of color and, like any human being, fear getting harmed. However however however however, is this not the exact argument we are making about police, that their first thought is to draw a weapon without even assessing the situation? But also, we’re not cops? But also also, cops only need 6 weeks of training, so what really is a cop anyway?

Like any sensible millennial, I took to a group chat full of my liberal-loving friends for their opinions of the hypothetical situation and the verdict was: don’t bring a gun to a knife fight.
