mi casa e su casa

Flashback to when I taught my Korean exchange student how to shotgun a beer.

I got this message from my German friend and it was the highlight of my day.

It’s times like these that I understand the importance of global connectivity and cultural exchange.

I was reminded of my time with Ji-In, a Korean student who study at Coe for one year. We were in a musical together and a few plays.

Considering the musical was set in 1950s America, the Asian head count in the cast was impressive.

She had a great impact on my life and I’d like to think I left the same kind of impression.

A Christmas card from Ji-In.

Who would have thought that a year later, the roles would be reversed. I would come to her home country, South Korea, for a semester abroad.

Taken in a dank basement bar in Korea.

What will our next cultural adventure be? Maybe I’ll give her the 4-1-1 on the allure of exotic animal ownership and she can explain to me why Koreans have a weird obsession with corn-flavored snacks?

Lesson: This is the peak of cultural exchange. I’m glad to know my existence has left some mark in this cruel and dark world.
